Why you donāt have to be nervous about prepositions anymoreāespecially in meetings.
Prepositions are small words.
But they cause a lot of stressĀ for many English learners. š¬
Even fluent speakers get stuck on:
š āIn the meetingā or āat the meetingā?
š āOn the tableā or ānext to the tableā?
š āGo to the clientā or āgo from the clientā?
This is what I call:
The Preposition StrugglebusĀ š
But good news: there's a simple trick.
Itās called The Box Theory.
(And it makes English easier to see, feel, and remember.)
šPro Tip?Ā
ā”Use our image as your phone lockscreen! (Youāll see it everyday!)Ā
Now, to the meat and potatoes of the theory. š„³
Think of a box. Then ask: where is the thing?
Ā š¦ On the boxĀ = on top
Ā š¦ In the boxĀ = inside
Ā š¦ Under the boxĀ = below
Ā š¦ Next to the boxĀ = beside it
Ā š¦ In front of the boxĀ = at the front
Ā š¦ Behind the boxĀ = at the back
Ā š¦ To the boxĀ = going toward
Ā š¦ From the boxĀ = going away
When you see the image below, you remember the meaning.
š” Thatās why I tell my clients: āDonāt memorize words. Memorize the picture.ā
šÆ In a meeting, if you say āIt went fromĀ the supplier toĀ the client,ā you're showing movement.
Ā If you say āThe files are on the table,ā everyone knows exactly where to look.
š§ Using prepositions well = Clarity. Confidence. Credibility.
And if you're still nervous?
Youāre not alone. 99% of learners feel this way.
But when you understand the logic behind the words, it gets so much easier.
Trust meāyour English brain just wants a clear map.
