Do you ever feel like it’s awkward when it’s time to approach the boss? We’ve all been there.
In this post, we’ll lay out 3 real-life situations and how to handle them—especially if English isn’t your native language.
We’ll show you how to:
✔️ Receive direction on a project
✔️ Bring up team issues
✔️ Follow up when your emails go unanswered
The key? 👉 Stay friendly, yet calm.
Why it works: It’s not an emergency. It’s just a chat. 🙂
Picture this: You need to talk to your boss. You’re not quitting. No one’s getting fired. But it is important. You just need… a minute of their time.
📌 The Formula:
✔️ Use their name in your greeting or request—it signals importance, but keeps it warm.
Example:
Hi Tom…
Tom! How’s it going?
Can I run something by you, Tom?
✔️ Be clear and quick. Especially with busy international bosses, short = doable.
✔️ Keep it simple. Don’t over explain. Say what’s necessary and important.
✔️ Follow up in writing. Confirm the time in Slack or Teams. Add it to their calendar. Make it easy to reschedule.
🗣️ What You Can Say:
📌 1. Project Questions or Direction
“Tom, do you have a few minutes this week? I’d love to talk about [Project XYZ] and hear your thoughts so far.”
✅ For timelines, roadblocks, or a mid-project reset.
🤝 Team Tension or Weird Vibes
“Tom, hi! I’ve noticed something about how things are going in the team—I’d like to discuss some ideas. Can we connect this week?”
✅ Calm, neutral, and proactive.
⏳ You’ve Emailed Twice. No Dice.
“How are you today, Tom? If it’s ok, can I stop by before we all head out? I’d love to get something on the books to finish up that email thread we started.”
✅ Moves things forward IRL—without sounding pushy. Keeps it neutral.
💬 These aren’t scripts. They’re strategy.
😎 Practice in a mirror. Repeat these phrases a few times, so you can use them when you need them.
✌️Preparation > Stress. You’ve got this! 🤙
